As the years go by, the bond between a filling and the surrounding tooth enamel can gradually start to weaken. This is even more likely to be an issue if you’re lax in your daily oral hygiene regimen or you have a habit of skipping your routine dental exam at Elite Dentistry PC’s Addison, Illinois practice.

This can allow the natural bacteria living in your mouth to compromise the cement holding the filling in place. Sometimes you can notice a problem like this as the tooth becomes increasingly sensitive or develops a gray shade in the tooth enamel. Other times, there might not be any overt sign that the filling is distressed and it simply falls out when chewing gum or eating a meal.

In a situation like this, our dentist, Dr. Mohamed Waheed might recommend the total restoration of the tooth enamel with a crown. This will create a nearly perfect replica of the tooth’s enamel layer. They are often made from either porcelain, gold, or a metallic alloy. The crown itself is hollow to allow it to be anchored on a pillar-shaped abutment of dentin, protecting the core structures of the tooth.

After removing the tooth enamel, Dr. Mohamed Waheed will make a detailed impression of the area after all the tooth enamel has been removed. The impression itself will be sent to our off-site dental lab where your permanent crown is made. A temporary crown will then be secured over the abutment. This temporary crown does not actually restore the full function of the tooth, it is only meant to protect the abutment while the crown is being created.

We will call you back in for a follow-up appointment when your permanent crown is ready. Once the temporary crown has been removed, Dr. Mohamed Waheed will cement the crown onto the abutment with a strong dental adhesive.
