If you’re not entirely sure what gingivitis is, but you’ve heard of it enough to know that you should avoid getting it, you’re like most people. It’s something that’s bandied about at dental offices and on packaging for oral health care products, but a topic that’s rarely dug into as much as it should be.
There are a few things you need to know about gingivitis, and today we’ll take a look at those. This way, you’ll be that much more able to handle your oral health on your own.
What is it?
Gingivitis is the earliest form of gum disease you may ever encounter. It can occur when plaque builds up along your gum line, hardening into what we call tartar. This collection of bacteria can – and probably will – cause oral health problems.
Notably, you’ll have red inflamed gum that could bleed easily. That’s what gingivitis is – inflamed, bleeding gums.
How to avoid it
This doesn’t sound like a fun problem to have. If you thought that, you’re right – it’s not. But can you avoid it? You bet – and doing so can be simple.
The best way to avoid gingivitis is to brush twice a day and floss. Flossing is perhaps the most important thing to do since it removes debris directly from your gums. Flossing removes all of the debris that can build up into tartar from between your teeth.
